TLS (Transport Layer Security) Protocol

What is TLS (Transport Layer Security) Protocol?

Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a protocol, which ensures the data integrity between the client and server applications over the Internet. When a server and client communicates with each other, TLS ensures that no third party may eavesdrop or tamper with any message. TLS is a successor to the Secure Sockets Layer protocol or SSL and provides the Secure Communication over the Internet.

It is good idea to keep in mind that TLS resides on the Application Layer of the OSI model. This will save you a lot of frustrations while debugging and troubleshooting encryption problems related to TLS.

The TLS is composed or made of two layers:

  1. The TLS Record Protocol: This is one of the top reliable transport protocol, such as TCP(Transmission Control Protocol) and provides connection security with some encryption method such as the Data Encryption Standard (DES). The TLS Record Protocol can also be used without encryption.

  1. The TLS Handshake Protocol: Allows the server and client to authenticate each other and to negotiate an encryption algorithm and cryptographic keys before data is exchanged.

About SSL n https with Advantages and Disadvantages

What is SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is an Internet protocol that allows website visitors to connect to a secure, encrypted webpage. Since the page is protected, any information submitted--such as names, addresses, survey answers or credit card data--is masked during transmission. There are few key advantages and disadvantages of SSL for website managers to consider.

Advantages of SSL Certificate:
  1. Trust: Customers Will Trust Your Website, through that trust you can increase your visitors and conversion.
  2. Verification: SSL certificate verify your entity and it guarantees your visitors you really are who you say you are.
  3. Attack Safety: SSL is a Guard against phishing attacks.
  4. SEO and Google: Better ranking in Search Engines - Google recently added having a SSL certificate as one of the ranking parameters for search results.
  5. Integrity of Data: SSL certificate ensures the data you send online are read by only the intended recipient and none else.
  6. Encryption: Encrypt Sensitive Information

Disadvantages of SSL Certificate:
  1. Cost: Using SSL is very costly.
  2. Increase Resources: The encrypted information uses more resources of the server.
  3. Regular Renewal: SSL certificate expires after a short period of time—usually one to five years. You have to renew the SSL protection regularly and pay the subscription price again forever in order to keep the protection. If you forget to renew the SSL protection, your website will display an error on the user's computer stating that the certificate is not valid.
  4. Latencies Issue: The speed of access when using an encrypted SSL connection is slower than with non-encrypted connections.
  5. Complex Installation

But if you would try to think about it, the disadvantages are just a few compared to the benefits of the SSL. It is needed to use SSL

Top Five SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) Certificate Providers:
  1. GoDaddy
  2. Verisign
  3. Comodo
  4. Digicert
  5. Thwate
